Altar Servers

The Role and Responsibilities of Altar Servers

Altar Servers have an important role in the celebration of Mass, they perform numerous tasks which support the priest and deacon throughout the celebration. These responsibilities include:

  • Leading the procession by carrying the Cross and Processional Candles. This procession symbolizes the light of Christ entering and leaving the assembly for that Mass.
  • Holding the Roman Missal for the priest to read prayers and blessings.
  • Presenting the bread, wine and water to the priest during the preparation of gifts.
  • Ringing the Bells during consecration to draw the congregation's attention to the most sacred moment of the Mass.

If you have interest in becoming an Altar Server at St. Christina, please reach out to Fr. Wayne via the Rectory at 773-779-7181 for our next training sessions.
