Bylaws - St. Christina Athletics

PURPOSE

The purpose of the St. Christina Athletic Association (SCAA) is to enhance the value of the Parish and Family through teamwork and sportsmanship. We pledge to foster mutual relationships with student-athletes in a nurturing environment that will enhance intellectual, ethical, spiritual, athletic, and social development. The purpose of SCAA is to develop team loyalty and team spirit by cooperating with other teammates and the coaches and to build self-esteem, self-confidence, character and respect for others.

PHILOSOPHY

Together as a Catholic Parish and the SCAA, we strive to promote the spiritual and moral growth, academic achievement, as well as participation in sports for each and every child of the parish in accordance with these bylaws In order to achieve maximum growth in each area, we strive to provide athletic programs that will set positive examples of Christian values and opportunity for providing a learning experience promoting growth of those participating.

Participation in these programs is contingent upon a student’s achievement in the academic, spiritual and moral areas of parish life. The success of our sports program should not be measured simply by the number of games won, but rather how each individual was given the opportunity to grow as a person, teammate and athlete. The participation in the athletic program at St. Christina Parish is a privilege and not a right.

The Principal or Delegate of St. Christina Parish has full and final voice on a student’s participation in the athletic programs of the parish. Students may be denied eligibility for either scholastic or disciplinary reasons.
A. Athletic Eligibility

However, RE students whom have previously played court sports at St. Christina will be grandfathered in. The RE student must have attended 80% of RE classes from the prior year/season to be eligible to play in a current year and maintain an 80% attendance rate for the current year to continue playing that season. (TWEAKED SLIGHTLY TO COMPLY WITH THE ARCHDIOCESE GUIDELINES)

  4. Any athlete, whom in the prior school year was enrolled in classes at St. Christina and for reasons other than expulsion, transferred out of St. Christina may still continue to participate in St. Christina athletics as long as they abide by all the other polices of these by-laws. This rule shall also apply to an athlete who transfers mid-term.

  5. An athlete is eligible to play when the required forms are completed, all current and outstanding tuition and fees for current and former students are paid, and uniforms/equipment from the previous sport have been returned. Fees must be paid by check or money order made out to SCAA. At no time will cash be accepted.

  6. The parents must meet their volunteer Parish Center / gym commitment.

It should be noted that your child’s participation and any future registration in any team activities will not be allowed until debt is fully reconciled.

  8. Any athlete, who fails to complete their season, will not be allowed to play future sports. Their parent or guardian will be required to present a written petition to the SCAA Executive Board requesting reinstatement. If the petition is not received and granted by the Executive Board, the athlete will not be allowed to play any future sport.

  9. Any child who receives an ineligibility notice, will not be allowed to practice or play during the timeframe determined by the school.

  10. Any child who is absent from school due to sickness is not allowed to practice or play during the days that they are absent.

B. Registration and Fees

The fee for the sport is to cover the cost of entering a team into a league(s) and any incidental costs associated with participating. The fee is not intended to cover the cost of tournaments. The participation in any tournaments is determined by the overall sport’s budget.

  1. Sports registration fees are non-refundable as outlined in the Refund Policy.

  2. Registration for all sports must be completed by the end of the registration period as determined and announced by the coordinator.

Parents will be asked to work in the concession stand, collect entrance fees at the door or work as a gym monitor. The gym coordinator will create a schedule of the work opportunities available after we are notified of the dates St Christina will be hosting games. Once the volunteer obligation has been fulfilled, the gym coordinator will return the deposit check to the parent. If the volunteer obligation is not fulfilled by the end of the season, the deposit check will be cashed.

D. Gym Passes

All families with children (including coaches) enrolled on basketball/volleyball teams, which utilize the gym for their games, MUST purchase a $25 gym pass. No family is allowed to register their children for basketball/volleyball without purchasing a gym pass at the time of sports registration. The $25 fee is paid once, per family, for a given school year. This means multiple children playing multiple sports equals a one-time gym pass until the next school year. The fee helps offset the paid gym supervision/concession personnel as well as helps offset maintenance needs. These expenses are not rolled into registration fees.

  5. Because 6, 7 and grade 8 levels are competitive, the team composition will be determined by skill level. Skill level will be assessed by independent evaluators who will use the SCAA assessment form.

  6. If a coordinator is the parent of a child trying out for that sport, the Athletic Director will take the place of the coordinator to participate in tryouts along with the independent evaluators.

  7. The Executive Board has the right to review the completed assessment forms submitted by the evaluators and may request from the coaches the prior season player stat books for review.

  8. Once tryouts are completed and teams are determined, coaches will be identified and selected.

  9. If there is no coach for the second team, the teams will be combined into one. If there are no coaches for either team, the Executive Board will determine whether or not that sport at that grade level will be cancelled for the season.

  10. The football team must adhere to conference rules.

  11. For basketball and volleyball teams, the number of players on each team’s roster will be determined by the coordinator with approval from the Executive Board after registration and is based on the total number of registered athletes.

  12. Football cheerleaders have no limit on number of participants.

  13. Soccer

  14. The spring league will be split by the agreement of the coaches. The coaches may decide to play Coed, Boys or Girls. The league is competitive from 3rd/4th grade up. If the numbers cannot support 2 teams at the 5th/6th, 7th/8th grade level, a team may be entered into the co-ed, if the numbers allow. The team will then enter the playoffs in the Coed Division.

  15. The fall league is all coed. The 5th/6th, 7th/8th grade teams play in a competitive league. If numbers at 5th/6th, 7th/8th are larger than 24 and less than 34, the team may play in an additional league.

  16. Co-ed teams must have a minimum of 7 girls on a roster.

  17. If the numbers cannot support two teams, the option to play in a second league will be considered to compensate for playing time. This will only be allowed if the budget is available.

  18. Playing time will follow the set guidelines of the SCAA.

  19. 5th/6th grade: A team must consist of at least 18 players. The number of players registered will dictate how many teams will be made. If the total number of players signed up is above 22, but less than 32, the coaches will evaluate 4th grade players who have the skill level to play up. This is with parental approval.

  20. 7th/8th Grade: A team must consist of at least 18 players. The number of players registered will dictate how many teams will be made. If the total number of players signed up is above 32 but less than 36, the coaches will evaluate 6th grade players who have the skill to play up. This is with parental approval.

  21. Teams can utilize lower grade player(s) to participate with the coordinators and parents approval, if the lower grade has a team and the grade can support a higher grade team.

  22. If after tryouts, the team size warrants more than enough for one team, additional teams will be formed, provided that there are enough coaches for all the teams.

XI. PLAYING TIME

Each player’s amount of playing time will reflect the player’s ability, effort, attendance at practices and commitment to the team. In grades 3, 4 and 5, 6B, 7B and 8B, playing time should be divided as fair as possible in every regular season game and playoff games. In grades 6A, 7A and 8A, the amount of playing time may be left to the coach’s discretion, however some playing time for all is mandatory during regular season games. This excludes playoff games. “Winning” at all costs, or to the exclusion of participation of eligible players will not be tolerated. Missing practices without the cause of excessive absences can result in reduced playing time and even exclusion from the team. Playing time may also be reduced as a disciplinary action when a player loses self-control or engages in other conduct unbecoming a Christian student athlete.
To ensure fair competition in regards to playing time among our students the following guidelines are recommended:
  1. All players should participate in every regular game. However, factors such as those discussed above, would be detrimental to playing time and carefully considered on an individual basis only when necessary.

  2. Grades Kindergarten through 5th will be deemed strictly instructional and playing time should be equally distributed. In grades with more than 1 team, the talent should be equally divided.

  3. Grades 6A, 7A and 8A teams should be geared towards the competitive nature of sports.

  4. In sports where a second league does not exist, every effort will be made to participate in “B-game” scrimmages on a weekly basis.

  5. All B teams will play students as equally as possible at all times throughout the season.

  6. For boys and girls basketball and volleyball, no team with the exception of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade is allowed to participate in any tournament or receive or ask for funding from parents or other outside sources such as business donations, etc…

  7. Boys and girls basketball and volleyball teams in grades 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B can enter up to 2 tournaments per season that are paid for by the SCAA.

  8. Boys and girls basketball and volleyball teams in grades 4th and 5th can enter 1 tournament per season that is paid for by the SCAA.

9. For boys and girls volleyball, no libero position is allowed until 6th grade.

These By-Laws were originated, compiled, and revised by numerous volunteer parents and parishioners over the years to ensure the children of St. Christina Parish have a safe and nurturing sports experience. It has always been the intention of the past and current Executive Board to have the most thorough and fairest by-laws possible. The wording of these by-laws was intended to be as clear as possible. Our By-Laws and Policies are structured in accordance with the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools Handbook for Athletics. It is expected without an option that the SCAA follow the “rules of the game” as they are outlined in the Archdiocese Handbook. We do understand that these by-laws may be interpreted differently from time-to-time. Therefore, it is always left to your elected Executive Board to determine what the "spirit" of the by-law was intended to accomplish. We encourage all parents and guardians of children enrolled in St. Christina school and the Religious Education program to attend the monthly SCAA meetings and consider serving on the association in some capacity.
