Thank You, Fr. Ryan and Ms. Carrie Spano - Savvy Senior Meeting - It is no wonder that our parish is so energized and exciting given our pastor and school principal. Leadership is knowing the way for our schoolchildren and parish. The seniors appreciated our “leaders” coming to our meeting and presenting their commitment and vision for our community. Thank you.

Savvy Senior April Meeting With Sue Fitzgerald - April 10, 2024

Thank You, Sue Fitzgerald, for our Savvy Senior April Meeting - On April 10, 2024, Sue presented her dahlias in all shapes and sizes and colors. Demonstrations were also done illustrating how to grow dahlias in tubers, their roots, cutting them, and how to nurse them. It was fun because of the participation. We are ready now for planting. St. Christina Senior Christmas Luncheon - December 13, 2023

We had such a good time at the senior Christmas party because of the Holy Name Men’s Club who generously supplied our meal, the many gifts supplied by Joan Mulcahy and Jan Smith, and lastly the songs by Mrs. Reich and our school children.

The whole gathering was delightful, made us hopeful, more joyful, more alive, and certainly more prepared for the coming of our Lord. Thank you one and all.

Savvy Seniors Welcomed Margaret Schroeder for a Presentation - May 10, 2023

Thank You, Margaret Schroeder - Margaret’s mission is to articulate the history of Mt. Greenwood, record it, and establish a historical “place” for all of our photos, stories, experiences, and memories. She has artifacts and lots of interview tapes over the years.

St. Christina, one of many churches in our community, is part of that rich and sacred history. If anyone wants to contribute to that endeavor or assist in reclaiming our resources, Margaret can be reached by contacting the Mt. Greenwood Residents Association at 773-450-0032.

Thank you, Margaret, for your memorable presentation on May 10, 2023 on our faith-based community.

Savvy Senior Program Welcomed Kathy Turney from Pat’s Pantry - March 8, 2023

On March 8, 2023, Kathy Turney told her inspiring storing to our Savvy Senior Group about how she established a food pantry called Pat’s Pantry at Mt. Greenwood Community Church. All who attended brought food donations, and Desie and Joan Mulcahy transported five baskets of food plus eight to nine bags of groceries to her food depository.

Pat’s Pantry is located at Mt. Greenwood Community Church, 3509 West 111th Street. Drive-through drop-off is the third Saturday of every month from 9 am to 12 Noon, and food pickup every Wednesday from 3 pm to 6 pm. No one should be without food, so if you know others who need help, please let them know.

Deacon Glenn Tylutki, Outreach Coordinator of Cemetery Services, gave an informative presentation regarding the Order of Christian Funerals. Our group had many of their questions answered. Deacon Glenn can be reached for further information at 708-236-5441.

Savvy Senior Group Meeting - Planning for Our Future - September 21, 2022

A warm thank you to Deacon John for meeting with the Savvy Senior Group on September 21, 2022 about “Planning for Our Future.” Like making a list for going to the grocery store and planning for a vacation, it is just as important if not more so to consider our spiritual health and plan for our future. Deacon John passed out an information sheet that could be used by the participants and also family members in planning for our Mass of the Resurrection. For further help or guidance in this, please call Deacon John at the Rectory.

Laura DeVries, PhD, the pharmacist from Jewel Osco in Merrionette Park, discussed the “Importance of Immunizations” and addressed many questions about the new bivalent Covid vaccine, the flu vaccine, shingles, pneumonia, and diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine. This past weekend, Laura and her associate provided all these vaccines at the Parish Center before and after all the Masses. Thank you, Laura. Those who missed this event can access Jewel Osco Pharmacy or any of our local pharmacies for vaccinations.

A special thank you to Carol Novy and Joan Mulcahy for helping with this needed service for our community.

Senior Christmas Party and Luncheon - December 11, 2019

Wonderful Luncheon at Garden Chalet for our Seniors!
Fr. Tom and Fr. Binu celebrated with us, and everyone had a great time.
Ugly sweaters were judged and great stories shared.
Many thanks to all who attended and wishes for a Merry Christmas.
Thank you, Carol Novy, for arranging.

Savvy Senior Meeting with Speakers - March 11, 2019

There were two speakers for Savvy Seniors on March 11, 2019.

Deacon John Mutnansky passed out materials for the group
to reflect on for end-of-life arrangements.

These arrangements provide an opportunity to let family members know
how we want to be treated after our death,
what songs to be sung during the Mass of the Resurrection, what readings, etc.
Sometimes it is stressful for family members to do this while they are grieving,
so it is good to leave some final wishes.

Please contact
John should you want help with this
(773-779-7181,
deaconjohn@stchristinaparish.org).

Roberto, the physical therapist from The Villa of Evergreen Park (Avantara),
returned to address safety issues again.

He demonstrated simple assessments with some of our seniors, as well as how to prevent falling;
he also demonstrated what we could do to get up or access help in the event of a fall.
Special thanks to
Joanna Graf from The Villa for sponsoring this important seminar for us.

Senior Christmas Luncheon - December 12, 2018

The St. Christina Senior Group experienced a grand luncheon at The Royal Palace.
It was an afternoon to remember because no one went home without a little something.
Special prayers were made for those not present and for the blessings we have all received this year.

Savvy Senior May Meeting - May 8, 2017

The main educational program this month was a speaker who has addressed the group before. Amy Delaney, a local attorney with expertise in elder care, presented “Myths about Trusts,” which was very informative.

Also, Matt O’Shea, 19th Ward Alderman, popped in after the program to inquire about any issues our elders might be experiencing.

Savvy Senior Meeting - Humor and Attitude and Well Being - March 13, 2017

Topic at Meeting:
Humor and Attitude and Well Being

Coordinator:
Joanne Graf, Clinical Liaison, The Vila at Evergreen Park

Speaker:
Joan Murphy, RN, PhD, Little Company of Mary Hospital, Behavioral Psychologist

Joan was an inspirational speaker and discussed how humor and a positive attitude are fundamental to our health. Being of service to others, being kind to others... were simple things we could all do to stay connected and healthy.

After Joan’s presentation, Senator Bill Cunningham, 18th District, and Representative Fran Hurley, 35th District, met with our group to discuss “scams” in our elder population. However, there were so many questions, this topic was not really addressed so will be rescheduled at a later date.
